Cry the Beloved Country is about Kumalo, a pastor, who lived in a small tribe where everyone feared the big city of Johannesburg. One day Kumalo recieved a letter from Johannesburg concering his sick sister. She had gone there many years before, and she hadn't returned. Kumalo then has to travel to Johsnnesburg to help his sister and battle the ways of the big city. There he finds that his son, who had also gone there and hadn't come back, on trial for the murder of Arthur Jarvis. The book then goes on to tell a story from James Jarvis, Arthur Jarvis's dad's, point of view.
Mainly this whole novel is about overcoming fear and having moral courage. Kumalo knew that things needed to change in the life of his sister, and he took a stand and went to Johannesburg to help her and make a change.
